چکیده
Abstract We investigate upon the shape and determinants of age distribution business firms. By employing a novel dataset covering population French businesses, we highlight that geometric law provides reasonable approximation for distribution. However, relevant systematic deviations sectoral heterogeneity appear. develop stochastic model firm dynamics to explain mechanisms behind this evidence relate them dynamism. Results reveal long-term decline in entry rates lower survival probabilities young Our findings bear important implications aggregate outcomes, notably employment growth.

On the size distribution of business firms
The size distribution of business firms is explained using number and size of firms' constituent components. It is a lognormal distribution multiplied by a stretching factor which can lead to a Pareto upper tail. This result is confirmed empirically. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
متن کاملInvestigating the Exponential Age Distribution of Firms
While several plots of the aggregate age distribution suggest that firm age is exponentially distributed, we find some departures from the exponential benchmark. At the lower tail, we find that very young establishments are more numerous than expected, but they face high exit hazards. At the upper tail, the oldest firms are older than the exponential would have predicted. Furthermore, the age d...

In a one-sided matching equilibrium endowment inequality induces a heterogenous distribution of firm sizes allowing for firms both too small and too large in terms of efficiency. The findings connect well to empirical facts such as the miss...
متن کاملRandom Division and the Size Distribution of Business Firms
The positively skewed distribution of firm sizes, with a large number of relatively small firms coexisting alongside fewer larger firms, is an enduring empirical fact in market economies. Typically, when data points conform to a Gaussian distribution, they are supposed to be the result of multiple random factors and not worthy of further investigation. A skewed distribution, on the other hand, ...
